Jesus,
I have always loved the coming of fall—
crisp mornings, changing leaves,
the scent of apples in the air.
But September opened a door to remembering,
and autumn carries the echoes
of so many I have loved and lost.
When the beauty awakens the ache,
come sit with me.
I remember those who knew me,
who laughed and listened,
who taught without knowing,
who believed in me,
who challenged me,
who loved me imperfectly,
whom I imperfectly loved.
They helped shape the woman I am.
When I miss being known like that,
come sit with me.
Some people left slowly.
Some far too soon.
Some goodbyes I was ready for,
and still a part of me holds on.
What they gave me I cherish,
even as I learn to live without their presence.
When remembering becomes heavy, Lord,
come sit with me.
You were my first love, Jesus.
Your presence a part of every hello,
every good-bye,
every change in me.
You are with me still,
as I discover the parts of myself
still waiting to become.
When I question who I am now,
remain with me.
When time tells me I have sat long enough,
remind me—
I am still needed here.
There is still love to give,
beauty to discover,
a life waiting to be lived.
And when I rise,
Jesus,
come walk with me.
Your beloved servant,
Cathy D.
